There are three tiers of kitchen cabinets, and they differ in how much is made to order. Stock cabinets are pre-built, factory-made units in standard sizes. They're widely available and usually the least expensive. Semi-custom cabinets are built to order from a manufacturer's catalog, so you can choose the finish, color, hardware and sizes within their options. Custom cabinets are built from scratch to your drawings, in your materials and dimensions. Price and lead time generally go up as you move from stock to custom, but they vary a lot by manufacturer and finish.
The three tiers, side by side
- Stock: pre-built and widely available. Usually the most affordable. You pick from what's in the catalog. Often available right away because the unit is already built.
- Semi-custom: built to order within the manufacturer's options. You customize the finish, color, hardware and layout. Usually costs less than full custom and ships sooner.
- Custom: made to order from scratch in your materials, your dimensions and your look. The longest lead time and the highest cost, but also the most control over fit and finish.
What the price difference actually means
The difference between tiers applies to the cabinets, not the whole project, but cabinets are one of the biggest line items in a kitchen, so the choice matters. The practical question is whether what you want (a specific finish, an odd size, a unique door profile) actually requires full custom, or whether a semi-custom line already offers it. If a catalog can do it, semi-custom gets you most of the benefit for less money and a shorter wait.
Lead time
- Stock: in stock or close to it. The fastest to get installed.
- Semi-custom: weeks, depending on the manufacturer. Longer if a finish or piece of hardware is a special order.
- Custom: the longest, because it's built from scratch. How long depends on the shop and its backlog.

- Stock: good for budget-focused projects and standard layouts, or when the schedule is tight.
- Semi-custom: real choices in finish, color, hardware and layout without the cost of full custom.
- Custom: for designs that need non-standard dimensions, unique profiles, or materials no catalog carries.
